I thought of this, it sounded interesting when I thought about it here it is

50 people from each academy are randomly chosen to be, what I think of it as, zombies. They can warp to all there friends beacons and they spread the infection. If you are banished you become a zombie when you come down. You can award the mages that last through the campaign lwith whatever you choose to.
