In Memoriam - 9/11/11

We are organizing a memorial observance on the morning of 9/11/11. On this day, from 0846 EDT to 1028 EDT the area of Lower Manhattan, bounded by the Tribeca Gateway to the north will be a No-Fire Zone. Orange and Green mages alike are encouraged to come to Manhattan that day, and place beacons in memory of the World Trade center. Please share this with your battlegroups and encourage everyone to respect this observance. Details follow.

This is a cloudview of Manhattan oriented to "New York North" which is approximately east-northeast. The red line is drawn through the Tribeca gateway. No fire below that line on the island or the surrounding waters. Also, the two gateways for beacon placement are highlighted on this view.

This is a view of the WTC site from the West. The gateway visible at the bottom of the screen is the Trinity gateway (which is physically misplaced, but conveniently located right at the sound edge of the site.) The red boxes are the rough outlines of the footprints of the towers. Ideally, we would like to place two towers of beacons in the footprints, but they are too close physically to achieve separation...

Every year NYC does a Tower of Light memorial for the Twin Towers. It is a little-known fact that the Towers of Light are not actually located in the Towers' footprints. This photo, taken from the water off the west of Manhattan, clearly shows that the lights are south of the site.

We can approximate this display by clustering our beacons on the Trinity and Bowling Green gateways. This screenshot was taken standing in the WTC site facing south. Place your beacons on either of the two highlighted gateways. (Note there is a WTC memorial at Bowling Green, so this placement is appropriate.) If you would like to place beacons in the footprints, of course go ahead. You will find them unmarked in SC, but very near the Trinity gateway.

Thank you all for your support and respect of this truce.

I was hoping somebody would organize something like this. It will be awesome to see Animators and Architects come together to honor the families that have suffered since 9/11.

Count me in. My beacon will shine at the site of the Twin Towers.

While this is a good idea and I'm all for it, you may want to consider limiting the beacons. The MAFM demonstration in Helsinki caused horrific lag and crashing spawning largely from too many beacons. What good is a show of support and respect if it has to be avoided?

I definitely see where you're coming from. If a beacon limit is set, what do you think it should be? I know I was experiencing some problems during the Universities campaign; 20 million beacons in one place was too much for my poor iPod.

I'm not entirely sure, however, I do think anyone with a beacon there should have their name on a list here, so anyone who wants to see the beacons can know who to friend. In the main post, perhaps, separated by Architects and Animators.

Gabriel -

Whatever you think makes sense. We can and probably should also request that the beacons are taken down at a specific time. Lemme know what makes sense... I'm happy to edit the main post as needed.

I would suggest that should be other ways for people to participate in the memorial instead of just everyone dropping a beacon. I know from experience the game runs fine with a dozen or so beacons, but I can imagine problems with hundreds of beacons.

Maybe we could encourage people who would like to participate to cast Aria of Light on each other at the memorial instead of casting a beacon?

Do you think that the actual limit that GA placed on our ability to create beacons after the Helsinki protest might prevent similar lag related issues? If people were asked to just leave one beacon would that help?

That's an idea that kind of crossed my mind after I thought about the whole beacon/uber lag situation. Either way, I'm there.

I think Gabriel is right here; we should set up a list to limit the number of beacons so as many people as possible can be there without a ton of beacons making it impossible to stay more than five seconds.

This may be the first time I will have been in range of an Architect and not fired at him. Hopefully nobody else decides to get cute and attack someone. Giant, I think you need to make a noticeable statement in the original post that there should be NO FIGHTING WHATSOEVER at the memorial. That entirely negates the point of what we're doing this for. Everybody should be allowed to tear down their beacons manually, and peacefully respect those that died.
