Extended Play

i stay at home all day taking care of my kids. as such, i have all day to play, and i leave the app open pretty much the whole time. this has 3 noticeable effects:

- battery dies pretty fast, under an hour i think.
not that big of a deal, as most people wont be having the app open as long as i do, or as often. plus i am at home so leaving it plugged in is a suitable option. it actually might not be that different from leaving other apps open. the differenece here though is that with most other apps i have done this with, the phone will still auto lock.

- phone gets hot.
as i said, i have left other apps open for a extended periods. i have not had the phone get this hot before. it does not seem to be a continuously progressive issue, and probably wont cause overheating, but is still concerning.

- app starts lagging.
not a connectivity problem, but rather preformance. drawing spells, moving the camera, warping, etc, all get progresively laggy. i start needing to draw slower because it wont recognize shapes that are drawn fast, even if they are perfect. all i have to do is close the app and reopen to fix it (at least for a while), dont even have to close it from the multitask dock. because of this issue, i shut everything else in the multitask dock when i am playing, so other apps being open is not the issue.

the battery and hotness are likely related, and probly have to do with the gps usage. lag is likely a memory issue, but it could be related as well.

EDIT: also i have started having it shut itself down for no apparent reason numerous times. sometimes right after opening it. usually while drawing a spell.

The game is definitely a power hog and the fact it pushes the device like it does is the source of the heating issue. Other games that are high performance will usually do that if played for extended periods of time as well.

I haven't experienced lag due to extended play in this game though, that might be explained by our models if you aren't using a iPhone 4, dunno though.

Crashes are very rare for me too so I can't really comment on them, only had it happen once or twice, which with the nature of apps nowadays isn't very surprising.

Edit: As for the not going to sleep with the app open issue, I personally prefer that for this app but perhaps they could make a toggle in the settings?

yeah, i am using a 3gs, so that could be it.

i also like that it doesnt go to sleep, sort of. it depends on the the app. if reopening the app will put me right back where i was, i dont mind it autolocking on me, because that will save me some power. with this one, and some others, since reloading the app makes you relogin and starts you at your physical location, i prefer not having it close on me. i was just observing that it might have something to do with the power and heat issues.

I've sort of noticed the same thing. I'm on a 3G and I notice I need to shut the app down and relaunch after about 45-60 minutes of play or it starts lagging something fierce. Could be a memory leak in the app or something, I suppose. Generally if something (an app, computer program, etc) gets laggier and laggier the longer it runs, that's usually an indication of a bug of some kind. Not always, but that's the case fairly often.

I'd expect it to be a battery hog. It's constantly polling the GPS (one of the biggest drains on the battery), using data (another big drain) and the screen is constantly lit up (yet another huge drain.) Reducing the screen brightness to as low as you can tolerate would probably noticeably increase the battery life. My problem is the battery still dies even if the phone is plugged in (though it takes considerably longer for it to happen.) I have no idea if this is a problem with my phone or if the app just uses _that_ much power. So I'm forced to take a break about once every 3 hours whether I want to or not.

I'm thinking the lag problem may be limited to older models sincee I've no lifed this game something fierce the past couple of days without ever encountering lag issues even once on my 4.

The battery dying even while plugged in is probably your phone having issues as mine doesn't, although if you're drawing your power from a computer then maybe its not keeping up, using a wall adapter I've never experienced drain while charging.

Temalyen, it is likely an issue with your phone, because mine still charges normally when its plugged in with the app running.

and yeah, it would seem it is likely limited to older models. but i dont think that it necessarily means the new ones dont have the problem, just that they have more memory at their disposal, so it doesnt reach a point that its a problem, or just takes much longer for it to.
