Etho - First of all, thanks to all that come up and put together this great event.

Questions:
1. Is the date finalized yet? Would love to participate the game, but am out during Thanksgiving and won't be back until Sat, the 26th.
2. Are flag beacons intent to be OOP throughout the event? If so, does it make sense to also put up a safety flag beacon somewhere else, so when there's only 1 flag left, we won't be able to pot the flag for convience purpose (easier to protect the flag as people can respond faster to ebcn)?

Hi Dual! confused by this. you can't pot an oop beacon? in any event there's nothing stopping people from putting up tons of their own beacons as I'm sure will happen and potting those

This may be somewhat long and I have a different direction I'd like to take, so please read the whole thing!

A. Each team should nominate Team Leaders to beacon global players in at Game Start.
- I suggest 3 players, all from NYBG. There are a few reasons for this that I will articulate below.
- The Team Leaders will friend their team's flag account. They will serve as notifiers that "x number" of flags have been destroyed on one team or the other.
- Global players will be asked to friend one (or all) of the Team Leaders in order to participate in the Game.

B. Those Team Leaders should be the ones leapfrogging the Flag accounts to the middle of the rivers.
- I also suggest that we reduce the 2-hour wait time to a mere 30 minutes before Game Start. Two hours is too long, and there are many greens who spawn near the East River and many oranges who spawn near the Hudson.
- I think we should try to call ALL of Manhattan a neutral zone in the Pre-Game-Start period.

C. Flag accounts only serve to create the beacons that will be destroyed and possibly posting statuses as notifications.
- As we determined, the Flag accounts won't be beaconing people in. The Flag accounts should already have 5 unpowered beacons in the rivers by the time the game starts.
- Thus, the Flag accounts only serve two purposes: Beaconing the "Flags" to be destroyed, and notifying the team leaders of how many flags are left to be destroyed.
- [Optional] Though this might make the Game boring to the two people playing them, the Flag accounts can be friended with their team, and during the Game, post statuses in order to notify the team that their Flags have been destroyed; this would be in lieu of the Team Leaders doing that.

So, in other words, the way this should play out is:

1. Each team will have 3 team leaders from NYBG and one Flag Account.
2. Global players who want to participate should friend their 3 team leaders.
3. Team Leaders communicate with their team about where to position their flags in the river -- this would ideally be in OFF-team chat.
4. In the pre-determined Pre-Game-Start period, the team leaders should leapfrog their Flag account to the middle of the river to the positions as determined.
5. Only at Game Start, or shortly before, can team leaders beacon near their Flags.

I know that this is adding a bit of structure and we don't want too many rules, but I think it's important to clarify how other players will participate.

kate,
thank you for the lovely ideas. I still think everyone should friend the flag, and then the flag can status who the BG leaders are. And as you said, the flags can be a central spot of information about the beacons and whether they still live.
but i think you forgot the most vital role of the flag - trash talking and pointing out how weak the green flag is in battle

Kate: lots of good ideas! We're essentially on the same page and I agree clarification is critical. (this is Etho99 posting as AnimatorFlag btw) Some comments:
1. team leaders are in general a good idea. people who can talk with each other to hash out any disputes. I agree they should be from NY BG. Anything else aside that means they can talk in cross-team chat about issues. 3 seems like a good number to me.
2. Agree that flags will ONLY do the following: create 5 OOP beacons in rivers as outlined. exhort people to come play through statuses and chat. remain inactive once game starts.
3. Don't think flags should friend opposing teams or post statuses during play -- as you said it would make things boring for their players. Instead they go silent at gametime. Team Leaders post notifications.
4. I just think easiest way to handle notifications is for Team LEaders to post on statuses. ALL SIX team leaders should be friends with each other so that any of them can pm the other side and request an update on how many flags remain. Team leaders are on their word of honor to report so honestly etc. As I've said before NY BG has high cross-team cooperation but I think easiest way to ensure this is that the OPPOSING team must approve the team leader nominations. So green says we want our leaders to be "A, B, and C" and the NY OJ get to say yea or nay to each of them and vice versa.
4. Completely agree -- team leaders help place the beacons verify they're in correct spot and inform the opposing team leaders that the beacons are legal and ready to go.
5. Once beacons are up, I think people should be able to start beaconing next to them, fortifying, healing etc right away. otherwise too complex. key is to make this as "natural" within the game as possible -- remember not everyone in nyc area in SC will be playing and we cannot control their behavior.
6. in reference to which: neutral zones cannot be rigorously enforced. If we push for a neutral zone and then someone -- all unknowingly -- violates it (maybe someone from france warped in via a friend's beacon in queens and sees a spider in central park and beacons up) we'll have accusations flying back and forth. Simpler the better I think that way there's no chance of dispute as to whether one team is acting in bad faith or it was just an accident.
5. from chat discussion with comicy and Mob-u-dhabi earlier: we think beacons should be limited to the rivers, within sight of Manhattan shore, S of 110 St (northern edge of Central Park) and N of Houston. We'll post screenshots for out-of-towners to see the geography.
6. also from that chat discussion: OJ will take East River, Animators the Hudson. Beacons over Roosevelt Island are ok for OJ otherwise half the East river would be unusable.

I very much like the idea. Kudos to those of you who came up with it!! Now do I have to friend both of you or just my team? Also does this game coincide with the SC campaign or is it on ita own?

We're doing this ourselves. Friend NY OJs and ArchitectFlag to play. Devs must at least be aware of this since they made it a sticky thread but it's not coordinated in any way with the campaign as far as we know and I assume it won't be.

RULES OF CAPTURE-THE-FLAG (version 1.4.0)
A contest hosted by NYBG, on November 27th, time TBD
Who is invited? you, and you and everyone else

How it works
This is a modified game of capture the flag, in this case, the “flags” are 5 beacons created by the players ArchitectFlag and AnimatorFlag. The simple object of the game is to knock out all five of the other teams beacons before your beacons get knocked out.
OJs should all friend ArchitectFlag, and Hippie-style Greenies should friend AnimatorFlag ,if you want to play.

Rules:
We are trying to keep this as simple as possible, but there are some rules that have been generally agreed upon

1. Each team will have 3 “Generals” who are in NYBG, and approved by the opposite team. The generals will help coordinate strategy, help recruit and spread the word and also update and monitor their teams beacons during the contest. Generals will also help to beacon in international players at the start of the contest.

2. Each team's Flag account (ArchitectFlag, AnimatorFlag) will create 5 beacons in the rivers off Manhattan (we will post screenshots for those unfamiliar with NYC geography) The animators will place their beacons in the Hudson river off the West side of Manhattan and the Architects in the East River (which is of course, on the east side - and also of course not a river but a tidal strait) The placement of the beacons is up to the team and its generals, with the following conditions being met:

a. beacons must be placed south of 110th street (the northern border of Central Park) and north of houston Street (a main East-West Artery in southish Manhattan)

b. beacons must be placed so that a mage whose orb is floating on the edge of manhattan, can see the beacon from said shoreline.

c. beacons must be in water - the only exception is Roosevelt island in the East River, beacons may be placed on Roosevelt.

d. team’s generals will be on their word that the locations of the flags satisfy conditions a,b,and c above

3. 30 minutes before the start of the contest, ArchitectFlag and AnimatorFlag will cast 5 out-of-power beacons in their locations, these will be the only structures casted by the flags. At this point, team generals may start to beacon in players and mount defenses as they see fit. All structures are allowed, in any configuration.

3.5. If you are participating and setting up structures, we are encouraging a cease-fire on the island of Manhattan from when the beacons go up, until the start time. This is obviously impossible to enforce, and we wont accuse people of cheating if we see them doing suspicious things in central park, but we can gently nudge and request people to respect the cease fire until...

4. Team Flags will signal the start of the contest and then - anything goes. You can use any structure, attack from any direction, I plan on physically swimming to the Animators base in the Hudson. Any natural gameplay not associated with the capture the flag contest will just be part of the game. Apologies to the level 6 who will be banned repeatedly when he unknowingly spawns in midtown.

5. One last plea - please, no alts, spoofers, spying and no cheating. Again, this is impossible to enforce, and i’m sure this is going to happen, but we are asking pretty please with sugar on top (splenda or stevia on top for those with glucose intolerance issues)

6.Team flags will essentially go dead after the start of the contest, their only function being confirming when their beacons are killed. The people driving the flags have been thoroughly vetted and approve of this message and will not recast beacons after an original beacon is "captured." I know this because I know the ArchitectFlag closely, and while a flawed individual, I would trust with my magelife.

7. Tactical strategies, we leave to the generals, their brigadiers, leftenants, cavalry, peasants with sharp sticks, et. al.

8. A Time limit has not yet been decided, but will likely be in the neighborhood of 2 hours

9. Fun will be had

this is being posted as "Rules of Capture the Flag" too
