New effects, spell animation coming at you instead of out of you seems backwards. It still looks cool though.
I think it is meant to show the mage draining magical energy from the surroundings before using it to fuel the spell.

We're planning on bringing the last online time to the web friend list. After this it should be much easier to edit your friends from the web site.

then we can choose which mages to delete based on activity
