So lemme get this straight.
GA has banned many long-time players for breaking secret rules.
What are these secret rules? Well, if they told you, people might break them.
How does GA know the secret rules were broken? If they told you, you might be able to figure out what the secret rules are.
How do we know we can trust the secret evidence? Well, it's irrefutable, isn't it?
How do we know it's irrefutable? Why, just look! It's caught all these cheaters!!

Oh, I forgot:
How do I keep my own account in good standing? Just don't break the secret rules and you'll be fine!

They aren't secret, they're obvious. i.e. if you find a way to remote harvest in a game that has a distance limit, common sense should tell you it's not supposed to be happening, it's an exploit, don't do it, there might be consequences even if they aren't announced. That's how manyh things are. take shoplifting for example. Not every store has a sign up that says they will prosecute shoplifters. Does that mean they aren't allowed to prosecute if they catch one? C'mon. Think.

Well, if they told you, people might break them.
No, If they listed all the exploits, MORE people would use them, guaranteed.

No, If they divulge their surveillance techniques, people would try (and probably succeed) to get around that too.

We don't know for sure but if we don't trust it, we don't have to play the game. GA's ToS is very similar to that of other games. They hold all the rights and even in cases where someone invests large sums of money expecting deferance in a time like this isn't heeding what they are agreeing to. It's about expectations as in not getting one's up too high. I don't see in the ToS where it says that GA would make all or even any of their tools public or tht they will allow anyone to buy immunity from anti cheaing efforts.
I have to admit I have some doubts but I learned a long time ago that the only person's actions I can be absolutely sure of are my own. I feel bad for any who had their account closed but until something happens to me that shouldn't I will trust that GA is being fair.

We are not closing accounts for minor uses of accidental game bugs or glitches, but rather as the result of intentional execution of major location circumvention, used repeatedly over time by someone who has logged into the account, be it the original account holder or someone who has gained or been allowed access.
We know that many high profile players were affected by this round of recent account closures, and that many of these same players were friended and connected to many members of the community, but we simply can't choose action or inaction based on the esteem of a given individual and how well they might be regarded by the especially vocal portion of the community.

Do players have recourse if their accounts have been hijacked?
So far, the answer appears to be "no".

I agree with the reasons for the bans. But before players were banned did they know this was a rule they were breaking? Maybe they thought it was fair.

This thread isn't about people being ticked their friends were banned (there are other threads about that). This thread is about the long-standing problem of poor communication on the part of Grey Area, coupled with further evidence of greater willingness to ban players for exploiting bugs than fixing the bugs they are exploiting. These ban-sweeps have the feeling of militaristic roundups. No one knows when they are coming, if they are safe, who might be taken next. And once the person is "disappeared", nothing but stonewalling from the authorities.

I am sad that there are accounts that were closed, especially mages with whom I have battled with or against, or have had great discussions with in Chat. Some I really enjoyed playing the game with.
With that in mind, I also have to trust that GA is doing their part to gather sufficient evidence to help them identify a pattern of behavior before they act in banning accounts. Mistakes can happen periodically, but, according to Chadj, the indications are that there are too many instances to qualify as "mistakes".
I understand the need to crack down on those using the exploits, but I also understand there is a fine line between cheating and competitive advantage. Where a competitive advantage exists, i.e. blast warping, it would be great to get GA's take on that.
I love this game, and there are many mages who I utterly respect. To see some of them fall breaks my heart, but I also have to trust that GA is not committing a knee-jerk reaction.
I look forward to some additional clarity from GA, and appreciate everything we all have done to make this game as great as it is.
Thanks!
